When in doubt, head to head comparisons are the way to go. I received a TB685EC in a testing program from Troy-Bilt and wanted to see just how different it was from a Troy-Bilt 2 cycle, so I went out and purchased the TB2044XP. I also purchased the Hedge Trimmer and Cultivator attachments. The TB20...
The Tap dispenser for the 0.095" double string is near impossible to remove the outer cover from the assembly for cleaning and string replacement. Right out of the box, releasing the spool cover was nearly impossible, it felt like it was bonded to the base. I have large strong hands and even with th...

The pull start sucks and will stop working after 2 or 3 starts. The electric start add on is nice but at the asking price not worth it...until you realize you can't use your trimmer without it. Also it leaks oil constantly out the reserve. You better store it somewhere where the oil won't cause a problem.

i bought this last year and it worked fine. when i serviced it this year and tried to start it, the engine failed. i had been using the elec starter, but it ffailed after trying to start it after just a few times. now the motor will not start, piece of the engine have fallen off and even with engine starter, i can't get it to run. no more TB's!

The trimmer was a little over 1 year old when, for no known reason, the engine locked up! All my equipment is always kept in tip-top shape so the reason is a mystery. I've never had a trimmer do this. One other problem with it, it was nearly impossible to keep the carb in tune. The idle adjustment screw was constantly having to be adjusted. The ONE positive? The ability to use different attachments. I did not replace the trimmer with another TB product.

I bought this a few months ago and it is a lot easier to get my trimming done.

My only complaint is that it's hard to start sometimes, and the carb needs cleaned way more often that I feel it should. Frustrating to have to clean carbs all the time to get it to run like it did when I first bought it.

Just bought this and really love it. It broke already though. The cutting head flew apart and won't stay together. The eyelets (where the string pokes out through) came out, and for some reason ever since that occurred the head won't stay together. I ordered a new head from Troy Bilt (hopefully the same thing won't happen). The other issue is the string continues to tangle inside, so when it does start to wear, it'll eventually stop coming out and you'll have to take it all apart and pull the string out anyway. I really like the auto-wind concept, but it defeats the purpose if you have to take it apart because it tangles the string anyway. I still gave it 4-stars though because you can get a replacement aftermarket head. You shouldn't have to, but you can. The trimmer itself, is full of power, balanced and just awesome. I would recommend this. I would also recommend Troy-Bilt fix the issue with the cutting head.
